What should I know before taking my first class?

Please plan a little bit of extra time to find us. Your first trip to the studio will confuse you if you don’t read these instructions! Exhale. We are no longer located in Warwick, NY. Make sure you go to The Body Art Barn location and not the Warwick studio. The address is on the bottom of every page. For a pole class, you should not wear any lotion or oils on your hands and legs. Sweating will release the lotion back to the surface of your skin, and you could slide off the pole! You also need to have a lot of skin exposed in order to stick to a pole, for most Pole Fitness classes, you will need shorts and a tank top or sports bra. For fluidity or dance based classes, regular dance attire is fine. It may feel weird to wear so little clothing at first but you need to have a lot of skin exposed in order to stick to the pole and many tricks are impossible when you’re covered up with clothing.

How do I sign up for a class?

Students must sign up online before coming to the studio. This is to ensure we have enough space in classes, that you've signed the liability waiver and read our Terms & Conditions. To sign up for regular drop in classes, sign up through our scheduler on Mindbody or on our 'Schedule' page. Purchase the New Student Special if you can afford it! It is certainly the best bang for your buck and you can come to as many classes as you want for thirty days!

What is your class cancellation policy?

We have a 12 hour cancellation policy. If you don’t cancel your class within 12 hours, you will be charged for the class…even if you have an unlimited membership. Please be mindful of class capacity and freeing up space for someone else if you know you cannot commit ahead of time.

Do I need a dance background?

Nope. Some of the best pole dancers today have zero dance background! You will learn everything you need to know in class. Start with Intro to Pole and from there you can work your way up to more advanced classes. You can also take our fluidity classes, pole strong classes, choreography workshops and badass yoga classes to round out your training.

Do I need to be in shape to pole dance?

Pole dance is for all people of all fitness levels, shapes, sizes and genders. Period. If you are big, mid-sized or little, you can attend class. If you are an athlete or out of shape, you can attend class. If you are a man, a woman, gender fluid or non-gendered, you can take class. If you are a human, you can take class. However, if you are under 18 years old, you must have a parent come in person to the studio to sign a liability waiver in order for you to take class.

What should I wear to class? Should I wear heels?

For pole dance classes, you should wear shorts (something like a boy shorts cut), and a tank top ( top that exposes your armpits). It may feel weird to wear so little clothing at first but you need to have a lot of skin exposed in order to stick to the pole. Having fabric covering your thighs and arms will slide you off the pole. For yoga and dance based classes wear your normal yoga attire. We normally go barefoot for beginning level classes. You are welcome to bring your own heels.
